Don’t just dream about remodeling your home—start doing it! Here are six simple strategies for uncovering your remodeling muse.

1. Ask the Pros. Just because your sister-in-law (the one with exquisite taste) designed her family room addition doesn’t mean you have to do the same. In fact, it’s perfectly OK to approach architects or builders with a problem—“I hate my dark kitchen” or “I wish we could take better advantage of our view”—but no solution. Professional remodelers love a challenge, and their insightful questions will define your needs.
 
2. Flatter Your Friends. Sometimes inspiration is right under our noses—in the homes of design-savvy friends and family. If someone you know has recently remodeled and you love the results, don’t hesitate to ask them about it. Most folks will happily share everything they learned along the way, and their advice may be just the encouragement you need to take your first step.
